Helpful aids
essay writing aidsFor the course essay, you must follow the structure posted here.
For the course essay, you must follow the body paragraph structure posted here as well as the format for your thesis sentence.
The essay posted above shows you what my expectation is for structure for an academic research essay. I have colour coded a few important parts so you can see how they look in an essay. Please also pay attention to how the works cited is done as well as the parenthetical references.
Please make sure you visit the link posted below to the MLA style guide that you must follow when writing your works cited as well as your parenthetical references.

The above posted sample essays are from students in the Grade 10 history course. These were high level 4 essays. Use them to help you edit your essay and to illustrate my expectations for essay writing in this course. Pay attention to how these students wrote topic sentences...notice the transitions in the topic sentences in the 2nd and 3rd body paragraphs. As well, look at how they parenthetically referenced research to support their claims and, finally, look at their works cited; this is what I expect from you.

Research aidsTo help improve your "google-fu", which is your ability to navigate the web to find relevant research to your topic (without automatically going to wikipedia) you have to take time to do the following:
1) Go to the Innisdale School web page. 2) Click on the Library tab 3) Under the RESEARCH heading click on Google Search tips and use it to help you research for all activities you're required to go on line for. 4) Under the RESEARCH heading click on web search strategies and watch the brief video.
sample paragraph for testsThe following paragraph illustrates the format I expect for formal paragraphs that are written on tests. Notice that, in this case, the topic sentence makes a claim (which it normally doesn't in an essay). Other than that, you'll see the rest of the steps quite easily.
